Requirements are practically a constant in the project world. Without requirements, there can be no useful development - whether plan-based or agile. But in times of technological changes like these and in the context of advancing digital transformation, the aspects that make up good requirements engineering are all too often ignored - with the corresponding negative consequences.
A strong RE community is a lighthouse for process and development matters and it is exactly this community that our conference aims to strengthen and promote.
Meet the French RE community, RE experts and members of IREB in an international environment and expand your network.

The key change from the previous version is in Chapter 6, which is about scaling RE@Agile. The new syllabus and the new handbook provide clear guidance on how Requirements Engineering is embedded in the work with agile frameworks.
The update to the CPRE AL RE@Agile module is intentionally timed to coincide with the split of the AL exams.
To remind you: As of July 1, 2022, the multiple-choice test and written assignment will become two independent exams, each of which will be awarded its own Advanced Level certificate.
IREB is splitting the CPRE Advanced Level certificate, previously awarded for the combination of a successful multiple-choice exam and written assignment, effective July 1, 2022, and introduces two new certificates instead: the CPRE Advanced Level Practitioner certificate and the CPRE Advanced Level Specialist certificate.
That’s new as of July 1, 2022
A corresponding certificate will be awarded for each Advanced Level exam passed:
Prerequisites for the new certificates
That’s new for the Written Assignment
The task descriptions for the written assignment of the different CPRE Advanced Level modules will soon be provided for download on the IREB homepage. Candidates will be able to inform themselves in advance about the required contents and decide, if and when they would like to take the CPRE Advanced Level Specialist exam.
The previous twelve-month period between the multiple-choice exam and the submission of the written assignment will no longer apply.
That is staying the same
The contents of the CPRE Advanced Level syllabi, handbook and exams remain unchanged, so preparing for the exams can be done as before!
Resume
The current CPRE Advanced Level exam will be available until June 30, 2022. As of July 1, 2022 there will exist two independent, sequential exams with the changes described above. See also the graphic with a comparison of the old and the new CPRE Advanced Level exams and certificates and the FAQs.

Professional Requirements Engineering is a key success factor. The figure of 70,000 CPRE exams underlines this statement. The CPRE certification scheme originated in Europe, where the first exam was taken in February 2007. Since then, the education has gained worldwide interest and acceptance, so that today IREB proudly looks at CPRE certified professionals in 85 countries – ranging from North and South America, Europe, Sudan, Mozambique, Mauritius and other African countries to Asia and Australia.
This spread proves the worldwide demand for deep understanding of Requirements Engineering and for professionalism in this key discipline.
It also shows that IREB has succeeded in keeping the certification scheme in sync with the evolution in RE through the addition of Advanced Levels, Expert Level and the integration of agile approaches.
The education provides professionals with valuable hands-on help in their RE tasks today just as it did 14 years ago.
Here are a few voices from CPRE-certified individuals on how they perceive the added value of the education:
“Being a CPRE has given me the necessary knowledge to constantly deliver fit-for-purpose software requirements. A further result of applying the methodology is raising the bar in the Business Analysis department.” - Ana Vasilecu
“Requirements Engineering, based on the CPRE qualification, enables us to monitor and criticize the life cycle of system requirements, from the definition of the system context to the post-deployment.” - Maurício Campos / Cosin Consulting, Brazil
“We observed greater efficiency in the consultants’ work, less frictional loss, and ultimately better requirements.” - Frank Engel / relationshipper, Germany
Statements like the above and the number of more than 70,000 CPRE Foundation Level candidates are a strong motivation for IREB to continue developing the CPRE certification scheme to further professionalize RE.
IREB's ambition - as an independent non-profit organization - is to continue to play the leading role in RE education.

The International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB®) and the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) have allied to further promote the Requirements Engineering and Software Testing professions together.
The IREB® and the ISTQB® qualification schemes are closely related and each organization supports the qualification of professionals in their respective subject domains based on the current state of practice.
With both certification programs recognized throughout the world, many software quality professionals already obtain both the IREB® Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE) and the ISTQB® Certified Tester (CT-FL) training and certifications. Hence, by aligning the terminology taught in the two qualification schemes, professionals will gain a consistent view of testing and requirements engineering.
The first joint project between IREB® and ISTQB® has been to establish alignment between their respective Glossaries - the list of terms and definitions used to underpin their subject domains.
IREB® and ISTQB® have successfully reviewed their Glossaries and aligned the terms that are used in each, and IREB® and ISTQB® are pleased to announce the publication of these newly aligned Glossary releases dated October 2020: the the CPRE Glossary version 2.0 and the ISTQB® Glossary version 3.5.
“Together with IREB®, we have identified an overlap of 75 terms used in both Glossaries. To our great satisfaction, many of them were already consistent. At ISTQB®, we have adjusted the definitions of 6 quality terms, and removed 19 requirements engineering terms from our Glossary, referencing the IREB® Glossary instead. These changes are now implemented in English, other supported languages will follow soon.” – said ISTQB® Glossary Working Group Chair Matthias Hamburg.
“This alliance is of strategic importance for us because it supports professional excellence. I thank the joint team for the successful work in aligning the terminology. We are committed to further strengthen the compatibility of the two qualification schemes.” – said ISTQB® President Olivier Denoo.
“We are happy to have reached this important milestone in an excellent cooperation. The new CPRE Foundation training will be based on our new Glossary v2.0. But time does not stand still. We will keep in touch to maintain and improve compatibility.” – said IREB® Council Chair Prof. Dr. Martin Glinz

At the weekend we received the sad news that our honorary member Emmerich Fuchs has passed away, already on November 14th after a long and serious illness. Unfortunately, the news does not come as a surprise, Emmerich had to give up more and more of his activities in the last years due to the serious illness. Nevertheless, it is painful.
Emmerich was committed to IREB for many years. He helped shaping the Foundation Level from the very beginning and was a valuable discussion partner - professionally and personally. He paid special attention to the examination questions and here he made a significant contribution to ensuring that they exist in the well-known high quality. Wherever in the world a person takes a CPRE multiple choice exam, Emmerich's work is the basis for it.
Even though Emmerich was not able to personally attend the meetings of the working groups and the IREB General Meeting due to his illness, he was still interested and contributed actively. In recognition of his services to IREB, the General Meeting of the IREB e.V. appointed him as the first honorary member in 2018. We will keep Emmerich in honorable memory, we will miss him very much and we will miss his wise contribution. Our sympathy goes to his family.
In order to enable CPRE examinations without going somewhere, IREB has permitted remote exams for a limited period until June 30, 2021. Depending on how the situation with the Corona virus evolves this period might be extended.
If dedicated countries continue to impose curfews, IREB allows remote proctored exams in these countries until one month after the end of the curfew.
In connection with an online or virtual training, successful certification is thus possible even during the current curfews!
Talk to your training partners or certification body! You will find them via the links below!
IREB monitors the quality of the remote proctored exams and will decide afterwards whether they can be continued in the future or not.
Due to the extraordinary situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting impact on the professional and private life, the completion time for the written assignment can be extended once by 6 months upon request and with justification. The process of application and obligation to provide proof remains valid. Details can be found in the examination regulations, paragraph 5.2.
We are happy to announce that IREB will launch the updated CPRE Foundation Level 3.0 in English and German on October 1, 2020!
From October 1, 2020 until March 31, 2021 exams in English and German for the CPRE Foundation Level certificate can be taken both, based on syllabus version 2.2 and syllabus version 3.0. Candidates may choose. From April 1, 2021 on, exams in English and German for the CPRE Foundation Level certificate can only be taken based on syllabus version 3.0!
As of now exams for the CPRE Foundation Level certificate in all other available languages are still conducted based on syllabus version 2.2. These exams will be switched to syllabus version 3.0 as soon as the translations are available. Of course, there will be a grace period of 6 months for each language where candidates can choose to take the CPRE Foundation Level exam based on syllabus version 2.2 or 3.0. This grace period will be defined for each language individually, depending on the date when the exams in that particular language are available.
We are still working on a handbook for the Foundation Level, similar to the handbooks for the CPRE Advanced Level modules. This handbook will be provided for free download on the IREB website. We hope to be able to provide it in October 2020.
Together with the CPRE Foundation Level syllabus 3.0 we will also publish a new version of the CPRE Glossary, which is aligned with the new syllabus version and as well to the ISTQB glossary.

In summer 2017, we conducted a survey to investigate the relevance of the existing CPRE Foundation Level certification version 2.2. This survey reflected that the existing Foundation Level syllabus v2.2 generally still serves the most important needs of the market and imparts the relevant RE knowledge to the candidates. Nevertheless, we received feedback that several techniques are no longer used in practice, whereas others are missing in the search for more iterative and adaptive development. This feedback was in line with IREB’s own perception of the changes in the field of Requirements Engineering. We have therefore decided to create a major revision of the CPRE Foundation Level syllabus, removing outdated content and adding new elements.
We are now happy to announce that IREB will launch the updated CPRE Foundation Level 3.0 in fall 2020! The exact date is not yet fixed, but we aim for October. Stay tuned, we will inform you as soon as the date is fixed.
There will be a grace period where candidates can choose to take the CPRE Foundation Level exam based on syllabus version 2.2 or 3.0. This is to ensure that candidates who prepare for the exams right now (based on syllabus version 2.2) will be able to go for the certification, even if version 3.0 is already launched when they are ready to take the exam. This period will be 6 months from the launch date of the Foundation Level 3.0 in a certain language.
In the beginning we will launch the Foundation Level 3.0 in English and German for sure. Other languages may be launched at the same time depending on the progress of the translation. If the syllabus version 3.0 in a certain language is not yet available, when we launch version 3.0 in fall, version 2.2 will stay in place for that language until the translation is available. Once the translation is available and launched, there will be as well a grace period of 6 months, where candidates can choose whether they want to take the exam based on syllabus version 2.2 or 3.0 in that particular language.
We are working on a handbook for the Foundation Level, similar to the handbooks for the CPRE Advanced Level modules. This handbook will be provided for free download on the IREB website.
Together with the CPRE Foundation Level syllabus 3.0 we will also publish a new version of the CPRE Glossary, which is aligned with the new syllabus version and as well to the ISTQB glossary.
Stay tuned!

The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) and the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB®) have entered into an alliance to further promote the software testing and requirements engineering professions together. As a first step both organizations have agreed to align their glossaries. The alignment will include the summarizing of the ISTQB® and IREB® terms, as well as adapting the ISTQB®/IREB® glossaries to accommodate the alignment.
"ISTQB® and IREB® are two organizations aiming to improve the quality of IT processes and products. They operate in different areas: ISTQB® in software testing, IREB® in requirements engineering. These areas interact and complement each other, allowing both individuals and organizations to have a more comprehensive view of software quality. Establishing cooperation between ISTQB® and IREB® is the first step towards systematization and further standardization of software production processes" - said Karolina Zmitrowicz, ISTQB® President.
"As the leading software testing certification globally, within ISTQB® we see significant value in working within the alliance with IREB® for us, our training providers and our candidates. By initially creating the inclusive software quality glossary this will improve communication throughout the software development process" said Geoff Thompson, ISTQB® Vice President.
"Software Testing and Requirements Engineering are co-located professions. Tying up with ISTQB®, fosters our leadership role in building better software. We see this as a natural step in developing software that is efficient and of the highest quality" said Kim Lauenroth, IREB® Chairman.
Mr. Stefan Sturm, Managing Director of IREB®, added - "The alliance with ISTQB® will bring a strong asset to our Training Providers. It demonstrates that the two most important certification schemes for software quality go hand in hand."
The timetable for the alignment of the glossaries is to be determined, but is expected to be complete in 2019. The aligned glossaries will be available from both ISTQB® and IREB® upon completion.

Four qualification boards have joined forces to launch the "Shaping the Future with IT" initiative, whose aim is to create an interdisciplinary body of knowledge fit for the challenges of software development in a digital society.
Information technology (IT) is no longer merely a tool to support existing processes. IT in and of itself now helps to shape innovative human interaction, work, organisations and our entire society. In order to meet this increased responsibility, four qualifications boards with different training focuses have joined forces to launch the "Shaping the Future with IT" initiative:
The aim of this initiative is to use the smart orchestration and integration of the four key disciplines of IT development in order to take active IT design to the next level - allowing associates to attain all knowledge required for shaping the future responsibly and sustainably through IT.
The necessity of this initiative stems from nearly 50 years of IT history, characterised by the emergence of numerous specialised subjects and disciplines and reflected in today's even wider variety of IT professions. The "Shaping the Future with IT" initiative's rationale is to counteract the trend towards a silo mentality in the management of knowledge and to provide an adequate response to both the increasing ubiquity of IT in our daily lives and the incessant shortening of innovation cycles. This development of IT from a tool to an innovator over the last few years has made it necessary to apply an increasingly cross-disciplinary approach to IT work, as propagated by agile process models for instance.
The four boards involved will have a shared stand at the OOP conference for software architecture held in Munich from 30 January to 3 February 2017 (1.16 to 1.19).
Coordinating body: Stefan Sturm, IREB, Stefan.Sturm@ireb.org.
A common purpose
IREB® and REQB® pursue the same general goal: to improve and foster professionalism in Requirements Engineering (RE) by providing a RE certification scheme with education syllabi and certification examinations.
Similar approaches
The certification schemes, which IREB® and REQB® have developed independently of each other, have similar names – CPRE® (Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering) by IREB® and REQB® Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering. This caused confusion and has at times been misleading. Also, their respective foundation level syllabi coincide in their content to a significant extent. This has finally resulted in the decision to concentrate forces within a single organization.
Joining forces
Given the common goal and the similarities in the two approaches, IREB® and REQB® have decided to join forces as of January 18, 2017. As a consequence, there will be a single RE certification scheme in the future, presented under the IREB® brand.
Benefit for candidates seeking RE certification
For candidates striving for more professionalism in RE, one single education scheme to become a Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering is a big benefit, as the weight and reputation of the certificate will become even greater than it already is today.
Effect on REQB® certificates
All REQB® certificates keep their validity.
Holders of the REQB® Foundation Level certificate may convert it free of charge into an IREB® CPRE® Foundation Level certificate.
Such conversion is required for persons who want to follow their education path to the IREB® CPRE® Advanced Level modules.
For the IREB® CPRE® Expert Level, the REQB® Advanced Level certificate will be accepted as one of the required prerequisites.

Karlsruhe, April 19, 2011 +++ On April 1st, 2011, the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB e.V.), initiator of the "Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering" (CPRE) certificate, has founded IREB GmbH to run its operational business. The managing director of IREB GmbH based in Karlsruhe is Stefan Sturm. On behalf of IREB e.V., the new company aims to promote standards in requirements engineering training to create an internationally understandable, consistent and recognized basis for communication. IREB e.V. has become an internationally acknowledged expert body for the certification of persons skilled in requirements engineering in the meantime. For carrying out software projects successfully, the discipline of requirements engineering is crucial. The reason for this is the fact that mistakes during the elicitation and documentation of single requirements for a solution and the lack of communication between software providers and enterprise customers are the main causes for the failure of software projects. With both software providers and customers having qualified CPRE professionals in their own ranks, they can jointly formulate a consistent and detailed catalogue of requirements for software development and can also lay the foundations for its success right at the start of a project.
The International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB e.V.) was established in 2006 by leading members of the requirements engineering scene from science, research, business and consulting. The neutrality and quality of the CPRE certificate initiated by IREB e.V. are guaranteed by means of strict separation between the development of syllabi and examination questions by IREB e.V., training of the candidates by qualified training providers, and audits conducted by certification bodies. The task of IREB e.V. is to develop the syllabi and the examinations for CPRE courses, to define rules for auditing, and to grant licenses to certification bodies.
IREB e.V. has already been very successful in its efforts to create a certification model that is internationally accepted. Since the introduction of the certificate in 2007, the number of candidates has increased continuously. By the end of 2010, nearly 5,000 professionals have passed the CPRE exam - mainly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also in Spain, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Egypt, the United States, Colombia, Brazil, South Korea, Malaysia and India. Syllabi and examination questions are available in German and English. In French and Spanish only the syllabi are available at present, with the examination questions being translated into these languages as well.
On March 30th, 2011 IREB e.V. has founded IREB GmbH, the operating company
for IREB.
IREB GmbH will support IREB e.V. in

First IREB Chair Chris Rupp will held a one day tutorial at the CinTeQ 2011 conference in Brazil on 30. March 2011. The tutorial will report about the IREB and the CPRE as a new worldwide RE standard. The main objective of the lecture is to cultivate the international understanding for the necessity of a unification of Requirements Engineering knowledge.
Description:
Cultures Speaking the Same Requirements: All Around the Certification for the „Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering”
Companies throughout the world are realizing more and more that requirements engineering (RE) is an important approach for leading projects to success. But there are a lot of different ways to carry out requirements engineering und thus particularly in international or locally distributed projects there is often the problem whether the programmer in India really does understand what the analyst form Berlin has specified. The main objective of the International Requirements Engineering Boards (IREB) e.V. (founded in 2007) is to achieve a standardization in the field of requirements engineering and therewith providing a clear communication basis. Leading requirements engineering experts coming from different backgrounds like industry, consulting, education and science have joined forces. Their aim is to increase and unite the requirements engineering education so that requirements engineers can speak the “same language” worldwide.
To accomplish that, they have developed a syllabus and the certificate „Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering“ (CPRE). Over 4,700 people worldwide were already successfully certified.
This lecture will tell you all around the IREB, the certification, the trainings, the examination procedure and the exam questions. Also the key differences to the "Business Analyst", "IIBA" and "BABOK" will be made clear.
Further the lecture will tell you about:
Afterwards the lecture questions will be answered and a discussion can take place.
Date: 30. March 2011 at the CinTeQ 2011
Place: Hotel Caesar Business Faria Lima, São Paulo, Brasilien
Duration: 1 Day
The tutorial will be held in English.
The current IREB Executive Board has been reelected with absolute majority on the recent general meeting on 25 November 2010. Chris Rupp (SOPHIST GmbH) will carry on being the 1st Chair, Rainer Grau (Zühlke Engineering AG) the 2nd Chair und Karol Frühauf (INFOGEM AG) the treasurer. We wish the three all the best for their new period of office.
IEEE Article from IREB Board Member Prof. Dr. Barbara Paech
"What Is a Requirements Engineer?" - The lack of a clear definition about what constitutes a requirements engineer is problematic. Companies trying to establish clear RE responsibilities don't have clear standards on how to train their people, define the role, or choose the right people for the job. The Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering initiative has established a syllabus and a certification framework to improve this situation in industry.
After comprehensive preliminary work the CPRE Advanced Level modules Requirements Modeling and Requirements Elicitation and Consolidation will be launched in Q1 2011. With the release of the first two CPRE Advanced Level modules IREB takes another benchmark in standardizing the education within requirements engineering. Syllabus and exam procedures will be published on the IREB website soon. Additional CPRE Advanced Level modules will follow.
Recognized IREB Training Providers offering English CPRE trainings will also adapt their training documents and their training descriptions up to the 1 September 2010.
Please note that all exams and exam questions up to the 31 August 2010 are still based on the old version of the syllabus (2.0).
The current CPRE Foundation Level Syllabus 2.0 and the current Examination Guide will be still valid until the 31 August 2010.
For information about the new German CPRE-FL Syllabus and the German Examination Guide please take a look at the German News. It is the same version switch with the same release date. The English and the German Versions are identical.
